Why Get Involved?

Make new friends and build your network

Some things are cliché because they’re true—one of them is that you’ll make lifelong friends by getting involved on campus. What’s on Wednesdays gives you the perfect chance to meet people who share your passions, whether through joining a society, attending social events, or participating in activities. Shared interests create a natural connection, and these friendships often grow into strong, supportive networks. Plus, when you graduate, your university friends can become part of your professional network. From navigating the job market to keeping up with industry trends, staying connected with your peers can be a huge advantage in your career.

A break from studies

Being a student or researcher can be overwhelming, so it's important to take a break from the pressure of exams, lectures, or thesis writing. What’s on Wednesdays is designed to give you that much-needed time away from academic stress. Whether it’s a creative activity like pebble painting, a sports event, or just a relaxing coffee with fellow students, there’s always something to help you unwind. Not only will you have fun, but stepping away from your studies for a little while can actually help you stay focused in the long run.

Enhance your skills

University is a time to grow, not just academically but personally too. Getting involved in activities beyond your coursework can develop important skills like time management, leadership, and communication—skills that employers highly value. By participating in What's on Wednesdays, you’re expanding your experience and building qualities that will benefit you throughout your life and career. Joining societies, sports teams, or volunteering groups also provides practical examples to include in job applications, making you stand out to potential employers. And who knows? You might even discover new talents or passions you never knew you had!

No pressure, no commitments

We understand that student life is busy, and sometimes it feels like there’s never enough time. That’s why What’s on Wednesdays is designed to be flexible. There’s no need to sign up in advance, no cost involved, and no long-term commitment. Just come along whenever you can, join in with the activities that interest you, and leave when you’re ready. It’s all about enjoying your time and making the most of the opportunities available, without adding any extra stress to your schedule.

Balance your studies and social life

Achieving a good balance between academics and social activities is key to having a well-rounded university experience. Joining clubs, societies, or attending events like What's on Wednesdays gives you a chance to relax and recharge, helping you return to your studies with renewed energy. Extracurricular activities are also a great way to meet new people and learn to prioritise your time. It’s important to step out of the academic bubble now and then, and engaging in social activities ensures you don’t miss out on everything else university has to offer.
