Green Week is here at Huddersfield Students’ Union, and it’s the perfect opportunity to take action on sustainability and make a real difference. Whether you're looking to reduce waste, shop more ethically, or learn about sustainable living, there are plenty of ways to get involved and have fun while doing it. In collaboration with Huddersfield University and Hud Sustainability, Green Week is packed with exciting events that highlight eco-friendly practices and encourage a greener future. Here’s your guide to the Green Week events happening on campus and how you can participate in making Huddersfield a more sustainable place.
Sustainable fashion is one of the key themes of Green Week, and what better way to shop sustainably than by visiting the Vintage Folk second-hand clothing stall on November 18th? Second-hand shopping is one of the easiest ways to reduce your environmental impact by keeping clothes out of landfills and reducing the demand for new garments. Not only will you find one-of-a-kind pieces, but you’ll be supporting a more circular fashion economy. Plus, it's a budget-friendly way to refresh your wardrobe!
A simple way to make your surroundings greener is by planting flowers, and that's exactly what you can do with the Disabled Student Society on November 20th, from 12 PM to 5 PM, outside the SU shop. Join the group for a sunflower planting session and help beautify the campus while contributing to local biodiversity. Sunflowers are also great for the environment, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. It’s a fun, easy, and hands-on way to support sustainability on campus!
On November 20th, from 12 PM to 5 PM, head to Student Central for the Revive: Reuse Shop event. Revive is a local charity that rescues reusable items from waste recycling sites and offers them at affordable prices to the local community. Buying second-hand reduces waste and supports a more sustainable way of living. At the event, you can also learn about volunteering with Revive, where you can help sort and repair donated items. It's a great opportunity to make a difference and support a local initiative while reducing your own environmental impact.
Green Week isn’t just about shopping sustainably – it’s also about connecting with nature. The Climbing & Mountaineering Club is hosting a Wellbeing Walk on November 23rd, and it's a perfect chance to get outdoors and explore the countryside. The walk will take place in Holmfirth, and participants will travel by public transport, making it an eco-friendly choice. Spending time in nature has numerous benefits for your physical and mental wellbeing, and it’s a great way to de-stress while helping the planet by reducing your carbon footprint.
Throughout Green Week, there will be a series of workshops and talks focused on how to live a more sustainable life. These events are perfect for students looking to dive deeper into sustainability topics like reducing waste, choosing sustainable food, or living more ethically on a budget. Whether you’re interested in learning about plant-based diets, ethical consumption, or zero-waste practices, the workshops and talks will give you practical tips and advice to help you make greener choices every day.
As part of Green Week, campus eateries will be offering a variety of sustainable food and drink options. From plant-based meals to locally sourced ingredients, these food choices not only reduce your carbon footprint but also support more ethical food production. Take this opportunity to try something new and explore the plant-based and sustainable options available across campus. Small changes in your diet can make a big difference when it comes to the environment.
Green Week is the perfect time to start thinking about how you can live more sustainably, and Huddersfield Students’ Union has teamed up with Huddersfield University and Hud Sustainability to bring you a week full of exciting and impactful events.
