Huddersfield’s BUCS teams have been in action again this week, delivering fierce performances across various sports. With both home and away fixtures taking place on 27th November 2024, the teams showed determination and skill, battling it out in rugby, netball, badminton, and more. Huddersfield teams brought energy and excitement to their home matches. Leading the charge was Huddersfield Women’s 1 netball team, who faced a nail-biting game against Northumbria Women’s 3, narrowly losing 42-45. Their effort and coordination earned them Performance of the Week, demonstrating the strength and potential of the squad.
On the rugby pitch, Huddersfield Men’s 1 rugby union team delivered a thrilling performance against Sheffield Men’s 3, narrowly missing out with a scoreline of 28-32. Gracie Johnson reflected on the match:
"Blood, sweat, and tears went into this week’s game against Sheffield. The Sharks gave everything, with incredible teamwork, try-saving tackles, and leadership on display. Watching the team’s structure come together on the pitch was a win in itself."
Captain Harrison Holmes added: "We knew it was going to be a fight, but the Sharks showed amazing resilience and solid defence, especially in the first half."

The Huddersfield Women’s 1 badminton team shone brightly with a 7-1 victory over Hull Women’s 1, showcasing their dominance on the court. The Women’s 2 netball team followed suit with an impressive win, defeating Hull Women’s 4 by 36-39 in a competitive game.
Over in football, Huddersfield Women’s 1 team secured a 4-3 win against Northumbria Women’s 4, bringing home a well-deserved victory. Meanwhile, Huddersfield Men’s 2 football team fought hard against Liverpool John Moores Men’s 5 but fell short, losing 2-8.
Harry Brown, match reporter for the Men’s 2 football team, reflected on the tough loss:
“We gave it our all out there, but sometimes things just don’t go your way. We’re going to regroup, focus on what went wrong, and come back stronger next week. Our attacking play was good, but we just couldn't get our defence to hold up. We’ll learn from this and focus on the positives moving forward.”

Harry also shared his thoughts on the match: "It was a tough game. We had a good start and played some decent football, but in the second half, the momentum shifted and we couldn't respond. We’ll need to be better next time, but this team has the right mindset, and we’ll keep working hard."

Away Fixtures
Huddersfield teams faced challenging matchups on the road, but their determination never wavered. In rugby union, Huddersfield Women’s 1 team faced a tough opponent in Leeds Women’s 2, resulting in a 38-0 defeat. Despite the result, the team showed great spirit and grit throughout the match, never giving up even when the scoreline widened. Their relentless effort, especially in the second half, was a standout, as they fought hard to contain Leeds’ aggressive attacking play.
Huddersfield Men’s 1 volleyball team came close to victory in a hard-fought game against York Men’s 2, ultimately losing 3-2. The match was a thrilling display of skill and resilience, with Huddersfield finding themselves 2 sets down early. York dominated the first two sets, playing with precision and power, capitalising on Huddersfield’s early errors. However, Huddersfield’s response in the third set was nothing short of extraordinary. With an incredible comeback, they clawed their way back into the match with a 25-12 win, showcasing a much more cohesive performance.
In the fourth set, Huddersfield continued to apply pressure, with standout performances from Number 3, whose spikes were consistently on point, and Number 9, whose strong serving kept York on their toes. By the time the set finished 25-22, Huddersfield had brought the match level at 2-2, leaving everything to play for in the final set.

“Huddersfield showed incredible resilience after falling 2 sets behind, clawing their way back with strong spikes and solid defensive play. Their fight to bring the game to a fifth set was a testament to their character and determination. Number 9’s serving and Number 3’s spikes were key to getting Huddersfield back into the match. In the final set, both teams were neck-and-neck, and it was heartbreakingly close. York’s strong serve proved to be the deciding factor, as Huddersfield struggled to return in the crucial moments. However, the comeback itself was a triumph, and the team showed great heart. If they continue playing like this, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the next games.”

York clinched the win in the final set, with a 16-14 scoreline, sealing their 3-2 victory. It was a hard-fought match, and while Huddersfield fell just short, they can take pride in their fighting spirit, particularly in their remarkable comeback.
In badminton, Huddersfield Men’s 1 team faced Newcastle Men’s 3, where they were beaten 6-2. Similarly, the Women’s 4 netball team encountered a strong Sheffield Hallam Women’s 6 side, resulting in a challenging 72-0 loss.
