Huddersfield’s BUCS teams brought their A-game this week, showcasing resilience and skill across various sports, including football, netball, futsal, and rugby. With matches both at home and away, Huddersfield’s teams battled it out on the court, field, and pitch, making their mark with impressive plays and standout performances. Let’s dive into this week’s highlights!
Home fixtures
Huddersfield’s home matches on 6th November 2024 delivered intense competition and memorable moments. Leading the pack was Huddersfield Men’s 1 football team, who secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Northumbria Men’s 7. Their efforts earned them the Performance of the Week honours, recognising their tenacity and skill in a closely contested match.
In netball, Huddersfield Women’s 1 team put up a strong fight against Northumbria Women’s 5, narrowly missing out with a final score of 39-44. As Gracie Johnson, who covered the game, put it, “Huddersfield took the lead as they dived into the third quarter with captain Abi Lees talking to her team, each and every pass.” Despite some contact penalties, the team’s goal shooter Maisie Reading was on target with every shot she aimed for. Gracie also highlights the electric atmosphere: “As the last quarter approached us, the voices/screams from Huddersfield’s spectators only got louder as each point was made. Players from men’s rugby, women’s hockey, and netball’s social members all showed their support for this memorable game.” Unfortunately, Northumbria edged out Huddersfield with a 44-39 win, but the effort and spirit shown by the team were undeniable. “There is no doubt about that,” Gracie concludes, praising Huddersfield’s players for putting everything they physically had into the game.
Meanwhile, Huddersfield Women’s 4 team faced off against Huddersfield Women’s 3 but came up short with a 4-34 result, showing determination despite a challenging game. As Gracie Johnson, who also covered this match, noted, “It was amazing to see how not only the captains were talking during the game but each individual player. It is inevitable mistakes would occur being so early into the season but this did not matter for Huddersfield teams. All players, on and off the court, were talking to each other, from wing attack to the subs on the bench.” Despite the loss, both teams demonstrated strong teamwork and communication, making it a valuable learning experience.
Away fixtures
Away games this week proved to be tough match-ups for Huddersfield’s teams. In futsal, Huddersfield Men’s 2 team took on York Men’s 2 and Teesside Men’s 2, facing defeat with scores of 11-2 and 5-2, respectively. Huddersfield's determination was clear, and they’ll be looking to bounce back in future fixtures.
Huddersfield’s Women’s 1 badminton team travelled to Durham to face their Women’s 2 team, resulting in an 8-0 defeat. Despite the result, Huddersfield’s players demonstrated resilience against a formidable opponent.
Over on the rugby pitch, Huddersfield Men’s 1 team went up against York Men’s 2, encountering a tough 67-7 defeat. Despite the scoreline, Huddersfield’s players displayed commendable effort and team spirit.
In tennis, Huddersfield Men’s FAST4 1 team faced York Men’s FAST4 1, battling hard but ultimately conceding a 4-2 defeat. The team gave a valiant effort and will aim to come back stronger in their next matches.
As reported by Harry Brown from Huddersfield Tennis, the match was a close call for the team in their first away game of the 2024-25 season. "We weren’t winning at all from the start but that’s because players were awkward and next time we should start with singles," said Gabriel, the team captain and coach. Despite a tough start, Gabriel and his partner Max fought hard in their doubles match, clawing their way back into the second set and forcing a tiebreaker. However, they were narrowly defeated 10-8 in the match tiebreak. Gabriel reflected, "We lost 10-8 in the match tie-break. We were quite unlucky, my partner hit me on the head with the ball, so I blame him actually."
On a positive note, Marcus was awarded MVP for his fantastic performances, winning convincingly in his doubles game with Hamul after a close first singles match. Gabriel expressed confidence in the team's future: "We’re going to work on everyone’s strengths and more specifics than more group training and master that craft."
