“Which is more important,” asked Big Panda, “the journey or the destination?”
“The company,” said Tiny Dragon.
This simple yet profound exchange resonates deeply with my experience as part of the Students' Union (SU) at the University of Huddersfield. Life, much like our time at university, is not just about the milestones we reach or the goals we achieve—it’s about the people we meet, the connections we forge, and the memories we create along the way.
My journey with the SU has been nothing short of extraordinary. It has been a whirlwind of emotions, energy, and passion. I remember the thrill of running in an SU election, the adrenaline of campaigning, and the hope of making a difference. Though I didn’t win, the experience was transformative. It taught me resilience, the value of teamwork, and the importance of standing up for what I believe in. It reminded me that sometimes, the journey itself is the reward.
The SU is more than just an organisation—it’s a family. It’s a place where ideas come to life, where voices are heard, and where students unite to create a better campus for everyone. The activities, the events, the debates, and the camaraderie all contribute to an environment that is vibrant, inclusive, and empowering. It’s a space where we grow not just as students but as individuals, learning from one another and building lifelong friendships.
As the next SU election approaches, I urge you to reflect on the power of your vote. This is not just about choosing a candidate; it’s about shaping the future of our university community. Look beyond the surface. Choose someone who embodies integrity, passion, and a genuine commitment to making a difference. Choose someone who will listen, who will act, and who will represent us all with pride.
The journey with the SU is not just about the destination—it’s about the company we keep along the way. It’s about the late-night planning sessions, the laughter shared during events, and the collective pride in seeing our ideas come to life. It’s about knowing that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.
So, as we move forward, let’s remember Tiny Dragon’s wisdom. The journey, the destination—they matter, but it’s the company that truly makes it all worthwhile. Let’s continue to build a community that uplifts, inspires, and supports one another. Let’s make the SU a place where every student feels they belong.
Together, we can create a legacy that lasts long after we’ve left this campus. Together, we can make the journey unforgettable.
Vote wisely. Choose the right person. And remember—the best journeys are the ones we take together.
