Each month, we highlight some of the societies that have really stood out at Huddersfield Students' Union. In February, we’re excited to feature a selection of societies for their hard work, dedication, and the positive impact they’ve had on our community.
First up is the Dance Society, who have had an incredible month. They attended their third-ever competition at the Leeds Dance Comp and achieved their highest scores yet:
· Jazz – 31/50
· Street – 41/50
· Lyrical – 36/50
· Duet – 38/50
· Solo – 38/50
Their Street routine placed 5th out of 8, just five points away from a podium finish. Despite unexpected stage conditions, they adapted quickly and performed with confidence. For many members, this was their first competition, and they embraced the experience brilliantly.
The committee also showed exceptional problem-solving skills when a last-minute costume delay threatened to cause disruption. Through quick thinking and strong teamwork, they sourced alternatives while successfully negotiating with the supplier to have the original costumes delivered just in time. Their dedication and resilience ensured everything ran smoothly.
Their growth this year has been remarkable, with over 100 members—double their expectations! They collaborated with the Chinese Society and K-Wave to rehearse and perform a K-pop routine for the Chinese New Year celebration, bringing members together for an unforgettable performance. Later in the month, they were invited by the International Office to perform at the Global Food and Culture event, showcasing both a K-pop and a tap routine to great audience feedback.
During SU elections, the committee engaged actively, carefully reviewing candidate manifestos and endorsing those whose values aligned with their society. They encouraged members to vote by sharing key information and reminders, making participation as easy as possible. One committee member even got involved in campaigning for a candidate.
For International Women’s Day, the committee teamed up with Women’s Rugby, Pole Fitness, and Netball to organise a bake sale, an evening gala, and a fun run in support of ActionAid. These events, taking place on the 5th and 8th of March, are being promoted across social media and are set to bring students together for a great cause.
The society has also been busy hosting joint socials, collaborating with Rugby League and later with Astrology & Spirituality, Cheer, and Pole Fitness. These events have helped members expand their networks and build friendships across different societies.
During International Women’s Day, Women’s Rugby worked in collaboration with Dance to raise over £200 for ActionAid. They did this through hosting multiple events, including a bake sale, a clothes donation point, and a 5K fun run around Greenhead Park.
They have also worked hard throughout the BUCS season to ensure they have enough players to make an impact both on and off the pitch. Thanks to the efforts of the committee and the dedication of their coach, Jess, they were able to fulfil the season for the first time post-COVID. Success isn’t the same for every club, so to complete the season was a real positive experience for the team and a building block to develop even further in future years.
A special mention goes to India the Social Sec for the Dance Society, whose commitment to creating inclusive, engaging events has been exceptional. India’s enthusiasm has been instrumental in building strong connections within the society, and her ability to foster collaboration with other societies has made a huge impact.
T’Hud’s committee deserves recognition for their incredible work in relaunching the student magazine. They have not only collaborated with the SU on promotional content but also shown enthusiasm and integrity in creating a sense of community among aspiring media professionals. Their dedication is truly inspiring.
The Pharmacy Society has also made a fantastic comeback after a quiet year. They successfully hosted a conference on campus, demonstrating great organisation in securing guest speakers, meeting deadlines, and delivering an informative and valuable event for students in their field.
Last but certainly not least, our Sports Society of the Month goes to Women's Rugby Union. They’ve made a real mark not just through their fantastic fundraising efforts and competition commitments but also by showing unwavering dedication to developing their team both on and off the pitch. Despite some challenges, they’ve remained strong and engaged throughout the BUCS season and are already setting their sights on even greater success in the years to come.
These societies have each made an outstanding contribution this month, demonstrating the best of student involvement, teamwork, and passion. If you’re feeling inspired, why not check out these groups and get involved? Find out more through Get Involved: https://www.huddersfieldsu.co.uk/get-involved
