Christmas is a time for slowing down, reconnecting, and reflecting on the year gone by. Whether you’re staying in Huddersfield over the break or heading home, your SU Officers—Wamick, Freya, Bethany, and Irfan—have come together to share their advice on how to make this festive season meaningful, enjoyable, and a chance to reset for the new year.

From exploring Huddersfield’s winter charm to reconnecting with loved ones, this blog will help you find ways to make the most of the Christmas break.

Staying in Huddersfield:

Exploring, resetting, and connecting

If you’re staying in Huddersfield over the break, you’ll notice things get a little quieter as many students head home and campus services wind down. But this is a great opportunity to take a break, explore the town at your own pace, and enjoy some well-deserved relaxation.

Wamick, SU President, suggests:

"Huddersfield in winter has a quiet charm to it. I’d definitely recommend walking up to Castle Hill. On a crisp, clear day, the views over the countryside are incredible. It’s a great place to take a break, reflect, and breathe in some fresh air."

Explore the outdoors:

Huddersfield is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the winter months make it all the more magical.

  1. Take a walk up Castle Hill to enjoy breathtaking views of the snow-dusted hills.
  2. Visit Greenhead Park or Beaumont Park for a peaceful stroll surrounded by nature.
  3. Explore Holmfirth for a charming day trip—it’s perfect for walking, browsing local shops, and enjoying some festive food.

Bethany, Activities Officer, suggests:

"While ActiveHud takes a well-deserved break over Christmas, there’s still plenty to keep you busy. Huddersfield has some brilliant walking routes and cosy spots to explore—so make the most of the time to recharge."

Find your own activities:

  1. Take up a new hobby or return to an old one—drawing, baking, or even starting a new series are great ways to unwind.
  2. Head to Huddersfield’s independent cafés, like Coffee Evolution or Northern Tea House, for a relaxing day with good coffee and a book.
  3. Discover local Christmas events in and around town. Many markets, light displays, and small events continue throughout December.

Freya, Equity Officer, suggests:

"If you’re staying behind, it’s important to take care of yourself and find ways to feel connected. Check in with friends, keep active, and don’t be afraid to reach out if you need support."

Stay connected and look after yourself:

  1. Arrange catch-ups with friends who are also staying in town. Even a quick coffee meet-up can lift your spirits.
  2. Keep active by exploring the local area or trying a new fitness activity to keep those endorphins flowing.
  3. Reach out to family, friends, or your community if you’re feeling a little isolated—you’re never alone.

Irfan, Education Officer, suggests:

"If you’re staying in Huddersfield to study or work on coursework, use this quieter time to your advantage. Set realistic goals and make sure to take breaks, too."

Study at your own pace

  1. Check the library’s holiday hours and plan your time wisely. The quieter environment can make studying more productive.
  2. Create a balance between work and rest—it’s important to take breaks and reward yourself for the effort you’re putting in.
  3. Find a cosy spot off-campus for studying, like one of Huddersfield’s coffee shops, for a change of scenery.

Heading home:

Recharging, reconnecting, and reflecting:

For those heading home for Christmas, this is the perfect opportunity to unwind, reconnect with loved ones, and celebrate the end of a busy term. Whether you’re returning to family or staying with friends, enjoy the change of pace and take time to reflect on how far you’ve come.

Wamick says:

"Heading home is a great chance to step back and think about everything you’ve achieved this term. Whether you’re a first-year settling in or returning for another year, give yourself credit for the progress you’ve made."

Take time to recharge

  1. Enjoy the simple pleasures—festive meals, movie nights, and catching up with loved ones can make all the difference.
  2. Switch off when you need to. Take a break from studying, screens, and social media to reset and relax.
  3. Spend time outdoors if you can—a walk around your local area can do wonders for your wellbeing.

Bethany says:

"Use the break to reconnect with things you enjoy outside of uni life. It’s easy to get caught up in deadlines, so take time to rest and have fun."

Reflect and reset

  1. Think about what you’ve accomplished this term and what you’d like to achieve in the new year.
  2. Set small, realistic goals to keep you motivated for January—whether it’s joining a new society, trying a new activity, or focusing on your studies.
  3. Celebrate the progress you’ve made so far—you’ve earned it!

Freya says:

"Christmas is also a chance to check in with yourself and those around you. Take time to enjoy traditions with family, but also look out for others who may need a little extra support during this time."

Irfan says:

"Take this time to reflect on what’s working well and what you might want to change next term. It’s a great way to head into January with a fresh perspective."

Whatever you choose, make it yours

Whether you’re staying in Huddersfield or heading home, Christmas is your chance to slow down, reset, and enjoy the things that matter most to you.
