Big Idea: Parent and Child Study Rooms at the University of Huddersfield Library

Supporting Student Parents: A Space for Success

The University of Huddersfield prides itself on being an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, including those with caring responsibilities. Following the successful implementation of parent and child study spaces at institutions such as the University of Salford, we propose the introduction of dedicated Parent and Child Study Rooms within the library.

Why This Matters

Many student parents face challenges balancing academic commitments with childcare. Traditional study spaces often do not accommodate the needs of students with young children, leading to difficulties in accessing essential learning resources. By creating a dedicated space, Huddersfield can further its commitment to widening participation and supporting diverse student experiences.

Key Features of the Parent and Child Study Rooms

Quiet but Child-Friendly Environment – A designated space within the library where student parents can study while their children engage with age-appropriate activities.

Soundproofing & Comfort – To ensure minimal disruption to other students while providing a comfortable space for both parents and children.

Child-Friendly Furniture & Resources – Small tables, soft seating, books, and educational toys to keep children engaged.

Access to Technology – PCs, printers, and WiFi access to ensure student parents can complete coursework effectively.

Breastfeeding & Baby-Change Facilities – Supporting the needs of parents with infants in a discreet and comfortable setting.

Booking System – An online booking system to allow fair access and ensure availability.

Impact & Benefits

Increases Accessibility – Supports student parents in engaging fully with their studies without compromising their childcare responsibilities.

Promotes Inclusion & Wellbeing – Reduces stress for student parents, promoting a healthier balance between academic and family life.

Enhances Retention & Success Rates – Providing additional support can contribute to student retention and academic achievement.

Building on Best Practice

The University of Salford successfully introduced a Parent and Child Room in their library, setting a precedent for inclusive student support. Adopting a similar initiative at Huddersfield would demonstrate a proactive approach to student wellbeing, further enhancing the university’s reputation for inclusivity and student-focused support.

By implementing Parent and Child Study Rooms, the University of Huddersfield can remove barriers to education for student parents, fostering a more inclusive and accessible learning environment for all.
