Unfortunately, sexual assault/harassment takes place on campus. Beyond spreading awareness and educating ourselves, it is difficult to prevent in the sense that it occurs when individuals are alone. Aside from the police, victims have very few options when an attack occurs. Also, perpatrators are able to leave without being caught, with little to no evidence of the incident. On campus, many buildings aren't accessible during the night, which would be places of refuge for any victims who are targeted on/near campus.

Our campus has the benefit of having 24/7 security, so I therefore propose panic buttons are spread around the University inside and outside, with a direct microphone/speaker connection to security. Security would immediately know which button was pressed, and for one security member to travel to the location while another stays on the other end of the microphone to aid the victim. Each button would also have cameras surrounding the button locations, hopefully catching footage of the incident and when the button was pressed. Every press would be automatically recorded and logged with timestamps, so the timings, footage and any witness information can be passed on to the authorities.

There is a risk that these buttons might be pressed for the wrong reasons, so I propose that the buttons are labelled with warnings of disciplinary action and possible exclusion for pressing them. The buttons would have a cover/flap that is easily removed to prevent accidental presses and to discourage tampering.
